Figure Ground
Hapa Collaborative's design scheme for London Ontario's Market Lane Design Competition. According to the jury, Hapa’s proposal distinguished itself by capturing the spirit of London; responding to the need for a pedestrian focused, day and night, all season urban environment; providing opportunities for interaction with the surrounding context and festival activity and innovatively responding to the community’s aspirations for the Market Lane. In the words of one of the jurors, “Hapa’s proposed design for Market Lane is beautiful in its simplicity, functionality, economy and contextual relevance: it promises a lovely, variable, and at times celebratory experience of place, daily and seasonally.” -
McBurney Lane
Hapa Collaborative is working with the City of Langley to revitalize McBurney Lane as a social space in the heart of downtown Langley. The proposal includes strengthening pedestrian connections through the Lane, create flexible spaces to accommodate a variety of programming, and integrating permeable surfaces, drought tolerant planting and rainwater infiltration as part of the City's sustainability agenda. -
ponderosa commons
Hapa Collaborative is the landscape architect and urban designer for the Ponderosa Commons at the University of British Columbia. The Commons will be a new mixed-use project that will house 1100 new students, space for the faculties of Fine Arts, Geography and Education, and a mix of cafes, galleries and collegium space. At the western terminus of University Boulevard, The Commons landscape is partitioned into three main spaces: the Bosque, a small contemplative space roofed by a grove of cherry trees; the Field, a larger open space that can be used for formal events or performances as well as everyday light recreation, and the Rooms, a series of classroom-sized spaces edged with a trellis / blackboard wall for instructional programming. -
Koo's Courtyard
Hapa developed a courtyard design for Koo's Garage, an award-winning urban infill project in Vancouver's Strathcona neighbourhood. A very narrow 8-1/2' wide site, the design incorporated modular benches, an outdoor kitchen, and a very cool custom rain barrel design that stores water, supports vines, and fits the building's industrial aesthetic. With a client group of six families, Hapa transformed several small, underutilized patios into a vital and delightful social space that is shared by everyone. -
Navy Monument
Hapa Collaborative is the landscape architect for the winner of the Canadian Navy Monument competition. The team of Hapa Collaborative, Al McWilliams, Joost Bakker, and Bruce Haden was the unanimous choice from the five shortlisted teams in the competition for the newest memorial in the nation’s capital. The site, located at Richmond Landing on the banks of the Ottawa River and within view of Parliament Hill, will commemorate 100 years of naval history in Canada. Hapa will complete working drawings and construction on the site over the coming months in preparation for the unveiling in the spring of 2012. -
E-scape
Working with Urban Arts Architecture, we are currently developing design options for the UBC Engineering Student Centre, or ESC. Located in a courtyard currently occupied by The Cheeze, a former dairy, the site will be strongly informed by a very active student program, the site's history and the site's relationship to the larger engineering district. The colour red - largely associated with the undergraduate program, will likely provide some inspiration for the project. Stay tuned! -
River's Edge
A former industrial site on the shore of the Fraser River, this new mixed-use development will include a blend of affordable and market housing adjacent to two new park sites along the north arm of the river. Hapa is proposing a series of park concepts that reference past industrial uses and landform. The scar of two former sloughs is reimagined as a series of walls marking the edge of the park. -
Kawaki
Hapa is developing the park plan on the site of the former Nakade Boatworks and Kawaki fish packers. Located on the south arm of the Fraser River the site will include a multi-use development housing residential units, commercial space, live-work studios and a large community space that spills onto the park and plaza. Our work will involve reinterpreting historic forms in the waterfront park. -
Terra Nova Bench Study
Hapa Collaborative is working with Richmond Parks to develop a series of benches for the park to compliment a series of artist-created benches dispersed in the park. The bench prototype - using site specific materials of large timbers and weathering steel - is designed to be added onto with various components depending on the location in the park. -
gold buddha monastery
Hapa prepared a conceptual design for a small courtyard adjacent to the monastery’s prayer hall expansion. Hapa integrated several symbolic plants into the courtyard including lotus and timber bamboo, two plants that are considered especially important to Buddhism. A punched steel screen at the south edge of the courtyard integrates stylized lotus motifs and screens the courtyard. Hapa eliminated ramps by designing a 5% sloped walkway through a grove of timber bamboo. -
hugh boyd
Hapa developed design ideas for signage and entry monuments for Hugh Boyd Athletic Park, a regionally significant park with an athletic focus. Precast spheres - conveying play and sport - were integrated into the sign and entry plaza. Construction will be complete for winter 2009. -
vancouver carpet
Hapa Collaborative submitted this award-winning concept for the Where's the Square competition hosted by the Vancouver Public Space Network. In collaboration with Doron Fishman and Xenia Semeniuk, BCSLA Associates, Vancouver Carpet received the People's Choice Award. -
